Obituary for John Robert Miller

John Robert Miller, Platte City, Missouri, 63, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. John was born on January 11, 1954, and was the eldest child of Robert Maxwell Miller and Violet Belle (Nunally) Miller. He attended Winnwood School, Cooley School, Eastgate Junior High School, North Kansas City High School and graduated from Winnetonka High School in 1972, where he recently celebrated his 45th reunion. John attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he majored in economics and political science, graduating in 1976. He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from UMKC School of Law in 1979.

John learned about hard work and self-direction beginning as a dishwasher at the Gold Buffet in North Kansas City when he was in the ninth grade. After law school, John worked a short period as an Appeals Referee for the Missouri Division of Employment Security. He began his career as a trust officer with the First National Bank of Kansas City in 1982. He worked several years for Arthur Andersen and Commerce Bank of Kansas City. John worked for twenty years at Bank of America, rising to the position of Senior Vice President.

John married his only girlfriend and high school sweetheart, Libby (Mary Elizabeth) Sears on August 17, 1974. He learned that when a guy attends church with his girlfriend he is in serious trouble. John attended church with Libby for over 30 years until he was finally moved to become baptized into the Community of Christ. John made all the important decisions in their marriage, and Libby made the rest. He claimed there were no important decisions ever to be made by him in their 43-year marriage.

John was well-known for his loud and energetic, yet off-key, singing, his intelligence, his ever-present white t-shirts, his unique sense of humor, his large laughs, and his enjoyment of politics and admiration of Harry S Truman. But mainly, John loved his family with his whole heart- he would share stories about his kids, niece, nephews, and, eventually, grandbaby with anyone who was willing to listen.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Irwin C. and Mary E. Sears, who loved him as a son and whom he loved as parents, brother, Rodger Lee Miller, and son, Bradley Robert Miller. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law's wife, Vicki Marie (Lapp) Sears. He is survived by his wife, Libby, of the home, and their children, Alison Miller, of Platte City, and Lisa Ross and husband Josh, of Platte City, and their daughter, Ruby, and his little sister, Judy Kay Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Curtis Sears and wife, Ruth, of Rockwall, Texas, and their children, Matthew Sears, of Midland, Texas, and Emily Sears, of Rockwall, Texas, and his brother-in-law, Robert Sears, and his children Robert, Michael, and John, all of Platte City, Missouri.

John's remains were cremated, and he hoped memories of him would be a sufficient memorial for his family and friends. A visitation will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 from 5 pm to 7 pm with a service celebrating John's life on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 11 am, both at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City, Missouri. Inurnment at Platte City Cemetery will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, John would have appreciated any donations made in his name to the Community of Christ, Smithville Congregation, or The American Heart Association.
