Mary Edna Nower, 83, of Weston, MO, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Atchison Senior Village of Atchison, KS. A visitation will be held 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, MO. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Graceland Cemetery in Weston. The family suggests contributions be given to the United Methodist Church of Weston, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Mary Edna was born January 21, 1931 in Ava, MO to Oscar George and Esther (Stanley) Schupp. She was raised in the Jefferson City, MO area, where she was a 1949 graduate of the Jefferson City High School. Mary Edna later graduated from Central Missouri State College, with a degree in biology. She accepted a teaching position for the Atchison, KS High School; and it was in Atchison, where she met her future husband, Jim Nower. The couple married on March 20, 1955 in Jefferson City; and began their life together in Weston, where they farmed and ran their seed distribution business for many years to come. Mary Edna took an active role in the Weston community in many aspects, including serving as Worthy Matron for the Eastern Star, and substitute teaching. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Weston, serving as financial secretary, choir member, and member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Mary Edna was also an avid quilter, and passed on these skills, through her teaching. She was also very passionate about her family’s involvement with sports, and this passion carried on over the years through her devotion as a West Platte Bluejays fan. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Jim; and 2 brothers George and Stanley Schupp. Mary Edna is survived by: her sons Jay (Vanessa) Nower of Weston, and Dan (Michelle) Nower of Knoxville, TN; 4 grandchildren, Jessica (Todd) Sebade, Curtis (Holly) Nower, Emma Nower, and Derek (Mindy) Nower; and a great granddaughter Arianna Nower.
