Obituary for Georgia Mae Martin (Blackburn)
On the evening of June 6, 2019, surrounded by a circle of her loved ones, Georgia Mae Martin passed from this earthly life into the eternal one to be reunited with her husband of 73 years and her Heavenly Father.
Born to Rollin Smith and Marion Henrietta Blackburn on December 14, 1928, in Stoutland, Missouri, Georgia Mae was the oldest of her siblings. In addition to the infant deaths of two younger sisters—Patricia and Virginia—and one grandson—Larry Don, sister Marian “Ducky” (Oliver “Spud”) Head and brother Carl “Corky” (Norma) have gone on before her. Sisters Peggy (Kenny) Porterfield and Karen (Dan) Meyers remain.
From an early age, Georgia Mae and Melvin had a friendship that eventually evolved into becoming childhood sweethearts. In February of 1946 they were married and truly became one (as affirmed in Mark 10 of the Bible)…until death did them part this year. Proverbs 12:4 says “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband.” Melvin Martin’s crown was Georgia Mae. The first fruit of that marriage came just over one year later when God gifted them with the first of their sons.
Those three sons—Jerry (Mary), Gary (Nancy), and Kenneth (Tina)—each have cherished memories including her mmm-good home-cooked meals, chocolate iced cupcakes (made from scratch daily) and LOTS of love growing up, along with fond memories of Scouting days when their mom volunteered as den mother. All her boys will attest to the fact that their mom was truly a servant at heart…even to the point of turning down their beds every night…up until the very last day when they would, one by one, get married and leave her “nest”. Not only did she nurture and encourage her sons but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren also shared those special times that will remain indelibly etched in their hearts.
Missing their grandma already are: Jason & (Jennifer) Neff; Melinda (John) Ward; Tina (Stephen) Jaworski; Carey (Brady) Rodgers; Deanna (Dave) Long; Karla (Jared) Leclair; Heath (Holly) Martin; Scott (Jackie) Martin; Cassie (Jason) Cleaver; Kyle Martin; Kenna Martin; and Kaila (Joshua) Combs…along with (22) great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
Georgia Mae was raised in the Christian faith and baptized at an early age. She went on to lead her own family spiritually, as well as teaching others in Sunday school class for several years in the Baptist Church. When asked recently what her favorite hymn was, she settled quickly on “Trust and Obey”.

A visitation will be held 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City, MO; followed by a 5:00 p.m. funeral service. Graveside services at the Stoutland, MO Cemetery will be at noon on Saturday, June 15, 2019.
