Obituary for Tommy Matthew Renz

Tommy Matthew Renz, 91, of Platte City, Missouri passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends on Monday, December 16th, 2019. Tommy, the youngest son of Charles Simon Renz and Elizabeth (Tatman) Renz, arrived in Platte City, Missouri on December 21, 1927 and remained a lifelong resident of Platte City. Tommy had a quiet, yet jovial charisma about him. What he enjoyed most in life was farming with his father, Charles, and brother, Jim. He always said he “loved every minute of it”. Tommy graduated from Platte County High School in 1945 after playing football and running track and even singing in the glee club. There were tales told by his friends of a fast boy that his coach had entered into every track and field event. He was noted as “the whiz” in his yearbook. Tommy remained an avid Platte County Pirate sports fan and especially enjoyed watching his 2 grandsons, Jake and Luke, swim for the Platte County Pirate Men’s Swim Team. Tommy was drafted into the United States Army in 1950 and served as a Sargent in the Korean Conflict until his return on Mother’s Day of 1952. Tommy married Joanne (Cox) Renz on June 1, 1963, and had 2 daughters, Janet Renz and Peggy Renz. He enjoyed his family, neighbors and friends and even played in a couples bridge club. Tommy was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, MO. He participated in many fundraising ice cream socials through the years. He also enjoyed the annual Platte County Fair as well as the Steam Engine Shows and often times worked hauling water or in some capacity at the Platte County Fair. Tommy was preceded in death by his wife Joanne Cox Renz, his parents Charles and Elizabeth Renz, and his brother Jimmy Charles Renz. Tommy is survived by his daughters Janet and Peggy Renz, 2 grandsons Jake and Luke Hodson, as well as devoted family friend and caregiver, Kristy Lee, and numerous cousins, friends and family. A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 am, Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City; followed by 11:00 am funeral service. Interment will follow at Platte City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Weston, Missouri or the Veterans Administration in Leavenworth, Kansas.
