Obituary for Gerald Thomas "Gerry" Shively, Sr.

Gerald Thomas Shively, Sr., 80, of Platte City, MO went home to be with his Lord at 1pm on Friday, Marth 25th, 2022. The eldest son of the late T. Ralph & Mildred Irene (Erdley) Shively, Gerry was born on December 11, 1941.

He spent his early life on a dairy farm in west Buffalo Township, Union County, PA and on April 9th, 1960 married the love of his life – Kay Louise Miller, who survives. Kay & Gerry’s married life spanned nearly 62 years and together they raised three children - Meladye (Kansas City, MO) and Gerald Jr. (Oak Grove, MO). They lost their middle child Greg to cancer in 1978. Gerry is also survived by two grandsons, Benjamin Shively (Houston, TX) and Austin Shively (Fort Pierce, FL), his sister, Karen (Jim) Carns of Harrisburg, PA and his brother Bob (Carol) Shively of Indiana, PA.

Gerry worked in the trucking industry his entire career - as on over the road driver and mechanic, as well as in sales and management. He retired in May of 2006 from Utility Trailer Sales of Kansas City.

As a young man, Gerry enjoyed hunting and fishing in the mountains of central PA and as his family grew, time spent with his children and grandchildren was most special. Gerry was an avid motorcyclist well into his 60’s and he & Kay logged many miles crisscrossing the US on their Suzuki Cavalcade touring bike. He also became a certified instructor with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and spent 15 years teaching new riders how to keep “the rubber side down.”

His family will miss his storytelling, his generosity of time and sharing his knowledge (gleaned from a lifetime of hands on experience) regarding home improvement and anything mechanical.

No services are scheduled and in lieu of flowers, Gerry’s family suggests donations to CurePSP - https://www.psp.org/.
