Herbert Odis Westmoreland, 84, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at his home in Platte City, MO. Herbert was born December 27, 1938 in Hugo, OK to Herbert and Lady (Goolsby) Westmoreland. He was raised in Idabel, OK where he graduated from high school. Herbert married Betty Katherine Covington in Scottsville, KY on August 19, 1960. He was a 1962 graduate of Southeastern State College in Durant, OK, with a degree in Education. Herbert was a School Teacher in Oklahoma and Kentucky; later working as a Civilian Employee at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Lexington, KY, operating some of the U.S. Army’s earliest computer systems. He moved to Platte City, MO in 1970 to work at Fort Leavenworth, KS as a Computer Programmer and Analyst, retiring in 1997. Herbert earned his master’s degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Platte City for 52 years. He is survived by his wife Betty; his sons Steven (Tiffany) of Aurora, TX, and David Westmoreland of Kansas City, MO; his sisters Sarah Westmoreland Pond of Turlock, CA, and Kathy Westmoreland Davis of Felton, CA; his grandchildren Katherine Westmoreland Bochart (Ronan) of Massillon, OH, John Westmoreland of Colorado Springs, CO, Lily Westmoreland of Fort Worth, TX, Sarah Westmoreland of Fort Worth, TX, and Samuel Westmoreland of Aurora, TX; and great grandchild Zadok Bochart of Massillon, OH. A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Platte City; followed by an 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service at the church. A private family inurnment will take place afterwards at the Platte City Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be given to the First Baptist Church of Platte City.
